If your remember last week, comedian Stephen Colbert testified in front of a Congressional Committee on the plight of migrant farm workers. It was widely panned by politicians and members of the Mainstream Media for obvious reasons. Politicians didn’t like it because it was as if Colbert flipped on the lights in the chambers of Congress to show all the roaches scurrying away. Colbert didn’t embarrass himself, the members of Congress did that themselves.
As for the mainstream media, well…let’s just call their reaction professional jealousy. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart routinely outshine the “professional journalist” by getting to the bottom of some of this country’s most outrageous “news items.” To this day I still think Jon Stewart was the only one to point out that, while Fox News elevated the “Mosque at ground zero” debate, they are partially owned by one of the Saudi men funding the recreation center at the heart of the debate.
But my main reason for writing this is because I shocked at the stunning hypocrisy of the media. Colbert insulted the intelligence of the American people. Right. He’s a comedian and he was just doing his job (If we ignore the serious answer he gave when actually asked a question or his written testimony entered into the official record). But please, someone from the media explain THIS to me:
Lawrence O’Donnell interviews Levi Johnston.
Where to start. Okay, first off, this is Lawrence O’Donnell’s new show. His guest on the first episode was Vice President Joe Biden. Strong and respectable first guest. I mean, the Vice President of the United States? Bravo. But then O’Donnell follows that up by booking Levi Johnston on the second show? That’s like a rookie debuting with 55 points and 10 rebounds in his first NBA game ever, then following up the next night with 0 points, 0 rebounds and 20 turnovers. Really man? Midterm elections are right around the corner and Lawrence O’Donnell decides to give Levi Johnston more free air time. Unbelievable.
But it gets worse.
O’Donnell reasoning behind giving Levi a platform was that Levi is a political candidate and he should be treated like everyone else.
BULLSHIT.
There are very few exceptions when CANDIDATES for mayor of a city get national media attention. Hell, there are only a few exceptions when current Mayors get national media attention. Outside of big city Mayors like in Washington DC, Newark or New York…Mayors of small towns are rarely seen. So when O’Donnell says he’s treating Johnston like everyone else, he’s talking out of his ass. O’Donnell even boasts that he’s asking Johnston the same questions Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin. Umm…Sarah Palin was running for Vice President of the entire country, not some small town in Bumfuck, Alaska. There’s a huge difference there. This wasn’t about giving someone a fair shot or informing the American people, it was about trying to embarrass Levi Johnston and Sarah Palin which would be fine if Lawrence O’Donnell was trying to position his show as a comedy show lead into the Daily Show and Colbert Report. To be honest, even Jon Stewart wouldn’t have given such a blatantly bias interview.
It’s unbelievable that I just had to defend Levi Johnston. I mean the guy is an idiot no doubt and has no business running for Mayor of Wasilla. But that’s not even close to a National issue and it’s beneath Lawrence O’Donnell to even waste his time with this young man. Promotions for ‘The Last Word’ have O’Donnell saying ‘Tell me something that makes me or my audience smarter.’ Well Lawrence, having Levi Johnston on your show doesn’t make anyone smarter…it just makes us all dumber.
This is what real journalist and pundits are pushing off as important news. Yet Colbert is the one making a mockery of the American people. Smh.
