Somehow, here we are talking about the same mess, different year. I know change is hard, citizens of the United States, but some stuff we just have to leave behind. In the short amount of time that we have been in 2010, I have witnessed the same stupidity, carelessness and self centered behavior that I swore was just a causality of the economy, too much excitement over Obama or other explanations that would not withstand the test of time. I was wrong.
What kind of stuff am I talking about? Any and all types of tomfoolery are what I’m talking about. For example, why is self-proclaimed legitimate news media (i.e. CNN, ABC News, etc) hell-bent on reporting entertainment news stories instead of real issues? If it weren’t for John Stewart and The Daily Show crew, we’d all be subjected to news stories of Heidi Montag of The Hills fame and the asinine reasons for her various plastic surgeries.
Reality TV is clearly the new vehicle to make money and since I live so close to LA, I need to cash in. I’m sure I could make a reality TV show about being young, stupid, half-naked and drunk and make quite a bit of money. After all, the general public does not seem to be able to get enough of that type of “programming.” If Snookie and the completely brainless cast of Jersey Shore can make $10,000 per episode to hook up, flash the camera some skin and fist pump into the techno-filled nights, then surely I can interview a few whores, have them perform random acts of whorishness on camera and call it reality. Oh wait…Steve Francis already coined that in the Girls Gone Wild aka Whores-R-Us series of dvd’s. Seriously…why is reality TV still a viable option for networks and the public at large?
In 2010, we still have political scandals regarding the sex lives of both current and former candidates. While I feel sorry for Elizabeth Edwards and I feel John Edwards is a douche for cheating and fathering a child with some videographer for his campaign, I do not need to know the intimate details of his affair. What baffles me though is how often this shit happens and how quickly and voraciously the media is there to exploit it. Have men in the political arena learned nothing from Gov. Mark Sanford, former New York Governor Elliot Spitzer and other men who get caught up, both literally and figuratively, in sex scandals? Seeing as we have to talk about this mess in 2010, I guess not.
Last year, T.I. went to jail for possessing an arsenal of firearms. While out on bail, he hit the campaign circuit to re-establish a somewhat legitimate and less dangerous image by helping kids in need and did a documentary on it. He got the media involved and he came away looking more like a reformed man, than a street thug with too much time and money on his hands. Great! Fast forward to this year and we see Lil Wayne about to do about a year long bid and making the media rounds to talk about it. Sorry Lil Wayne, no one is listening. We heard all this shit last year from your much savvier counterpart T.I.
Gilbert Arenas is this year’s Plaxico Burress. Beyonce is still winning enough Grammys that if she melted all the gold statues into bricks and supplied them to Haiti, the money yielded from selling them would feed everyone in the country, including the volunteers, for at least half the year.
I’m not a hater, I’m just tired of seeing the same shit, different day in our world. Sarah Palin’s got a gig on Fox News and their grooming her to be the female Bill O’Reilly. Sigh. Because that’s exactly what we need…another Bill O’Reilly, but more emotional and subject to even more violent mood swings for hormonal reasons, and not just because she’s a stupid Republican who reserves the right to make the rules as she goes.
I propose for the remainder of the year:
- We stop watching any and all reality TV
- Refuse to listen, watch, indulge in or comment on any stories not newsworthy on reported legitimate news channels
- We cease and desist giving rappers like Lil Wayne and other slow mutha-fuckers who continually procreate at the speed of light any burn on the radio, money via downloads, and even boycott their shit on Pandora.
- We stop supporting dumbasses that are getting millions upon millions to dribble a ball, throw a ball, run a play or hit a ball when they royally fuck up. Yes, that means you, non-voting, stupid blog writing Gilbert Arenas.
Honestly though, who I am fooling? Without of this mess going on and detracting from the real issues, I would have a more difficult time doing what I do. I might even have to read and research credible sources in order to talk intelligently about a situation, event, etc. I could no longer just skim the surface of an issue, like so many of us do, in order to report on it. I’d actually have to do…work. So, on second though, citizens of the United States keep consuming bullshit and loving it. It makes my job a whole lot easier.
