I think I have to go with Shep on this one. Definitely a sign of the apocalypse. I mean come on. Greasy bacon cheese burgers on doughnut buns. It not only sounds disgusting but its 1500 calories. 1500 calories. Honestly it sounds like something out of a Simpsons Episode. I can see Homer drooling now as he raises the doughnut burger to his mouth and then promptly has a heart attack. It’s sadly just another example of Americans not understanding that obesity is a problem in this country and they should stop trying to killing themselves by eating this crap.
CHARLOTTE – Seems there’s a tax for everything now in North Carolina. The state is going to tax state workers who are obese and those who smoke cigarettes. The move is to offset rising health care costs and because the state is short on money in the budget.
The health plan covers more than 600,000 state employees, retirees and teachers at a cost of 2.6 billion. State officials have yet to determine any potential savings from the obesity requirement. But, the higher cost for smokers could save 13 million in next year’s budget.
It’s also a move to get people healthy. According to Anne Rogers, Director for integrated health management with NC State Employees Health Plan, “Tobacco use and poor nutrition and inactivity are the leading causes of preventable deaths in our state. We need a healthy workforce in this state. We’re trying to encourage individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles.” “I agree that people if they smoke should be taxed more for health care purposes,” said Anne Smith from New York who supports the tax.
Critics disagree. The State Employees Association of North Carolina opposes the tobacco and obesity requirement, calling it an invasion of privacy. “This economy is not conducive to an environment to where you additional taxes and to have something like this and try and change somebody’s lifestyle at this point in time.. the timing is just off,” said Jennifer Hardman.
There are 14,000 workers in Mecklenburg County that potentially could be affected. Alabama is the only other state to impose such a tax.(Source)
I can honestly say I approve of this. Listen. 9 times out of 10, being fat is an individuals own fault. Fat people make inconveniences for everyone else. Ever sat by a fat person on public transportation before? Or been in an elevator with a fatty? Listen, its 2009. If you are too lazy to work out your damn self, well then get ready to pay more. People pay for luxury all the time. This time, fat people get to pay more for the luxury of being a fat lazy fuck.

The tax makes PERFECT sense. Since they are either obese or smoking, they are straining the system that provides them healthcare more than those that are maintaining healthier lives.

The state employees’ union says it’s an invasion of privacy? Dude. It’s an invasion of my finances, thus my privacy, to pay for their fat asses on my health care plan. And thank you corporate America for encouraging the rise in obesity.
1,500 calories. That’s my entire take on an average day.

totally agree with the tax… smokers and fatties have more health issues. wish more states would adopt it (thank you alabama).

I love the right wing argument against this… if the government can tell you what you can and can’t eat through this tax, what next? Telling women what they can and can’t do with their bodies? Oh wait…
