Anyone who witnessed BET’s half-assed tribute to Michael Jackson earlier this summer could see that BET has gone downhill and fast. People like myself, who actively boycott BET, were outraged that they used MJ’s death as a launching pad for debauchery at its finest. Lil Wayne and Drake talking about f-king every girl in the world as 10 and 12 year olds danced on the stage (side eye to both Nivea and Lauren London right now for procreating with that gremlin). Keri Hilson’s awful performance, Jamie Foxx plugging his tour every five minutes, and Ving Rhames actually equating drugs to Michael Jackson were all serious errors in judgment during what was supposed to be a tribute to one of the greatest entertainers ever. (Drugs are Michael Jackson—really? Thanks, cuz I’m quite sure that’s why he’s dead. Good reference dude!)
So, it should come as no surprise that a former BET critic turned exec Andreas Hale is putting the station on blast upon his release from the company. Basically everything that we, black folks who like quality music, suspected to be true about BET is true. Mr. Hale send out an email (read the email here) to his fans and those concerned about the state of black music on television to reveal what he knows. A good move? Who knows, but I am for anything that will get attention focused on the foulness that Bullshit Entertainment Television continues to perpetuate. So, I say to Mr. Hale, “write the book, do the slanderous interviews and single-handedly bring down BET!” It’s about time.
And to all the haters who will read this and tell me to lighten up or get over it, fuck you. I’m tired of seeing bullshit perpetrated and perpetuated on television by our own. BET is the new millennium’s version of the African slave driver that sold their people for guns and other commodities in the sixteenth century. And, because BET exploits our culture with the greatest of ease, it’s easier for anyone else not familiar with our culture or continued struggle to do the same. It’s like saying, “oh Africans sold their own into slavery” as a justification of why it was okay for White people to do it.
Wake up! Because we don’t stand up and boycott this station or speak out about why they should be shut down, we support it—directly or indirectly. I do not care that “X” amount of black professionals will lose their jobs if BET goes down. I do not care that we won’t have “our own” in terms of music (or otherwise) represented on television if BET is cancelled. I don’t know about you, but when it the last time you actually saw a video on BET? Furthermore, when is the last time you saw a video that reflected any portion of your everyday life on BET?
I’d rather have no station and make these lazy artists work harder for my money than to use BET as a medium to get their dumb, brain-cell killing music into my home. Fuck Lil Wayne, Drake, Trey Songz, T-Pain and the rest of them who stick to the script and have no innovation in their work. And fuck BET for continually pushing it. I’m glad there is someone with inside experience to speak out on how fucked up it is to work there and confirm what we already knew: that BET is a bunch of Uncle Toms working to get the almighty dollar and could give two shits about their trifling contribution to the state of Black America.
