So last night I was watching the Republican South Carolina debate on Fox News. I know what you’re thinking: “Why in the Hell were you watching that?” Well, see, Republican debates to me are extremely funny. Basically you get 90-minutes of chest thumping, flag waving, I’m-a-“Real”-American rhetoric that is short on substance but somehow seems to appeal to those that have IQ’s that match those of rocks. It’s pretty ridiculous. I liken it to watch an episode of The Real World because you have to suspend all beliefs to actually take anything said or done seriously. I’m trying to be nice here but it’s true. In order to believe anything the Republican candidates are saying you have to succumb to obvious half truths and fear. Quite frankly, I’m tired of it. There are several main issues that Republicans like to lean on and I just can’t for the life of me understand why any one doesn’t call them on their bullshit. Now let me state that I’m making some generalizations and that all republicans don’t claim some of the things that I’m talking about. There are actually some republicans that can critically think and are capable of performing logically thinking. The problem is they are few and far between.
Fiscal Responsibility – Republicans love to claim that they are the fiscal responsible party. I’ve seen a lot of black republicans claim that since they are about putting more money into their pockets they support republicans because they want lower taxes. That’s a load of crap. Lower taxes doesn’t necessarily equal more money in your pocket in the long run. So…your taxes are lower but you’re paying $3 – $4 a gallon for gas. Yeah, that makes sense. Just because the cost is redistributed doesn’t mean you aren’t paying for it. Think I’m lying? Well, if you ride the Metro in the DMV area you’ve undoubtedly noticed the new rate hike. I went from paying the already ridiculous fare of $3.90 to go from New Carrollton to West Falls Church to now paying $4.33. And to add insult to injury, they increased the parking fee to $4.25. The bill that would have provided $1.5 billion in funding over 10 years to the Metro is being blocked by a republican from Oklahoma (Tom Coburn). He claims we have to be fiscally responsible…so while he’s grandstanding, I get to get raped at the gas pump and now at the shitty service having metro stations. Great. But hey, at least my taxes are lower. I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather pay higher taxes and get better service, than pay lower taxes, see the costs of goods and services go up and still get the same shitty service. It amazes me of the number of republicans that cry about higher taxes but don’t seem to say nothing when we spend Billions in foreign countries like Iraq, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Israel or China. Makes a lot of sense.
Ronald Reagan – The republican love affair with Ronald Reagan completely disgusts me. Certainly there have been worse Presidents *cough* George W. Bush *cough*…but Reagan and the words ‘great’ don’t belong anywhere near each other like the name Karrine Steffans and the word ‘wholesome’. The main Republican Presidential candidates seem to be fighting over each other to see who can invoke and promise to bring back Reagan style government the most. WTF? So, instead of going forward into the future we’re going to go back 2 – 3 decades? How can any republican sit there and think that’s a good idea? Have we forgotten about “trickle down economics”? Yeah, make the rich happy and wealthy and they’ll eventually break some off for the lower and middle class. Or what about his bullshit “War on Drugs” that’s been a complete money drain. Yeah, we’ve really curbed that drug problem here in the U.S. You also gotta love the disparity between sentences for crack and powder cocaine. Thanks Reagan. Or how about the increase in the national debt from $700 billion to $3 trillion and our increased dependence on borrowing money abroad? And dare I bring up the Iran-Contra scandal. So let me see if I get this right. Reagan and his Administration illegally sold weapons to Iran and now, decades later, Republicans are calling Iran a deadly threat to our National Security…but at the same time want to take us back to the Reagan years. WTF? Reagan is given credit for “defeating” the Soviet Union in the Cold War…but when you look at the way he aggressively and recklessly increased the U.S.’s posture, it’s clear that the real reason the world wasn’t destroyed in a nuclear holocaust is because of Mikhail Gorbachev and not Reagan. So again…why does the name Reagan give hardons to republicans?
Iraq/Afganistan/”War on Terror” – Why is it that 7 years later people still don’t realize this “War on Terror” is bullshit? You still have republicans claiming that democrats are “weak” on foreign policy and National Security. Are you serious? In my best Jay-Z voice “Do you fools read history or do you just skim through it?” Quick history lesson. During the Soviet-Afghan war, the U.S. ran covert missions to train Afghan Mujahideen soldiers to combat the Soviets. The U.S. viewed this as a way to strike at the Soviet Union but not in a direct way. We provided training and weapons to these soldiers. Osama Biin Laden and his followers (now known as Al-Qaeda) were part of this conflict against the Soviets. The Soviet-Afghan war completely decimated Afghanistan. When the Soviets pulled out…guess who also pulled all support? Yup, the U.S. We basically left Afghanistan in a mess because we got what we wanted…a Soviet defeat. We turned the rebuilding of the country over to it’s neighbors, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia. We did leave all the weapons though (wasn’t that nice?) Pakistan forged ties with Afghan Warlords and later, the Taliban. Yup, you read that correctly. The same Taliban we went into Afghanistan to destroy, the same Taliban that cheered the Twin Towers falling, is the same one our “ally” in the War on Terror, Pakistan, was supporting. The same Pakistan we give billions of dollars to so they can “fight terror”. You see where I’m going with this? The Afghanistan fiasco can be blamed on President Jimmy Carter (democrat) and republican hero President Ronald Reagan. When you factor in Reagan illegally selling weapons to Iran, you really have to question this claim that the republicans are so much better than the democrats on foreign policy. This claim that we are winning in Iraq reeks of amnesia to what has happened in earlier conflicts. Arming the militias in Iraq with weapons to take over their own protection is just going to end up biting us in the ass just like it did in Afghanistan. But Republicans and their supporters would much rather just beat on their chests and wave their flags while shouting “We’re winning!!!!” than see that the manner in which we are “winning” is going to result in problems down the road. We “won” the Cold War, but no one had the foresight to see that the collapse of the Soviet Union would lead to military grade weapons (and nukes) entering the world market. No one thought that training Afghan rebels and leaving them with weapons and a fucked up country was going to bite us in the ass. But who cares about small details like that anyway?
Morals – My favorite out of the bunch of vile republican bullshit. I’ve heard black republicans say that they don’t know why more blacks aren’t republicans since the conservative views of the party align with the conservative views of African-Americans. Hmmm…well maybe the reason is that most of us don’t believe that our morals should be legislated. Seriously, the only ones that should be concerned about gay marriage are those that suck on the genitalia of the same sex as them. This republican Chicken Little, “Oh no the sky is falling”/Think of the Children bullshit would be laughable if so not for the fact that so many people buy into it. Of course, when republicans talk about morals they are talking about Judeo-Christian morals. Seriously, ask a republican why gays shouldn’t be allowed to marry but tell them they can’t use the Bible to do so. What you’ll find is they can’t. There is no legitimate reason why gays shouldn’t be allowed to marry. They say that homosexuality is a choice. I’m not going to get into that debate, but let’s say it is. So what? Let’s say Jimmy and Timmy decide to be gay and want to be married. What the fuck does that have to do with you? Does seeing them married and holding hands affect your life? Are you afraid it’s going to make you or your kids gay? Please…that’s as juvenile as the games we used to play in school when you used to run away from the opposite sex because they had “cooties”. Republicans claim that the U.S. is losing it’s “moral center” and that’s what’s wrong with this country. Umm….okay. So if there’s a Constitutional ban on gay marriage, can we also constitutionally ban those who commit adultery from getting remarried? What about those that fornicate before getting married. All these single parents out there should be forbidden from getting remarried. They committed a sin right? And we should be able to get rid of the 2nd Amendment. Who needs to bear arms? The Bible says ‘thou shall not kill’ so if someone threats your life, just do like Jesus did and turn the other cheek. Yeah…I know…all that shit sounds ridiculous and would be vehemently opposed by republicans and Christians…yet it’s the same ridiculous excuse they use for wanting to ban gay marriage. Ironically, when one of these republicans or Christians go to a foreign country (let’s say a Muslim country) and disrespect the laws and religion there, they’re the first one’s to start crying about tolerance. How about you try a little bit of that in your own back yard. Hypocrites….
Evolution/Climate Change – I wasn’t go to put this hear but I just have to real quick. I can’t support or take anyone seriously that can’t accept known science. Sure, republicans will pull out idiots from their back pockets to support their ludicrous claims that evolution didn’t happen and isn’t real and that global warming is a farce…but really, I can find a nutcase (with evidence) to say that MLK was a communist and that the UFO Dennis Kucinich saw was real. Does that make them credible? No. Admitting that Evolution happened doesn’t negate God or anything. Anyone with half a brain can realize that concepts of God and Evolution can co-exist. Denying things that can clearly be seen in nature, can be tested and have tons of empirical data to back them up is the sign of a fool. And anyone that supports a fool is just a complete idiot.
I was going to put this in the comment section but I figured I should just edit the post. I want to say that if come the RNC, if the republicans don’t nominate Senator John McCain, I’m officially losing the infinitesimally small amount of respect I have for republicans. McCain is clearly the best candidate on the republican side. Hell, he should have been the nominee back in 1999. I had a lot of respect for him then and I still do, although he’s lost a little ground with me since he started backing President Bush like a lap dog (but I think that is only to secure more votes in this nomination process). I respect him so much that come November, if by some chance Clinton becomes the nominee on the democrat side and she doesn’t pick Obama as her running mate…I will seriously consider voting for McCain if he is the republican nominee. I know…crazy right? Don’t worry, I’m feeling fine. It’s just that, say what you want about John McCain…he stays consistent (well, as much as a candidate can). While he does do that ‘chest thumping’ about U.S. military might…he gets an excuse from me because…well…he’s ex-military. The man has served this country, was a POW…he has the right to get passionate about stuff like that. It doesn’t disgust me half as much as when a draft dodger like George W. Bush does or when someone like Mitt Romney (who claimed his sons working on his campaigned equaled them serving their country) does it. Being ex-military and a POW, I don’t think McCain would reckless get this country involved in a conflict like GDubbya did with Iraq because McCain knows what that is like. No other candidate can say that. All of them talk about using force to deal with issues, but only McCain really knows what it’s like to be on the ground. I feel that while right now he’s sounding like an ultra conservative, the John McCain I remember was a moderate. So while I might not really vote for him…I wouldn’t be as pissed off if say a Romney, Huckabee or Giuliani won. So people need to stop bullshitting and vote McCain.
Note: this will be the first and last time I ever recommend a republican for anything.
